Inis Housing Association Ltd. is a voluntary housing body based in Mountshannon Co.Clare that is developing a number of innovative housing projects in the mid-west region. It has just completed a development of ten small family homes in the village of Monard in South Tipperary that included a number of ground breaking elements in the area of renewable energy. All of the houses are heated using a combination of high quality wood pellet burners and solar panels and all include an innovative waste water recovery system that will minimise water charges when they come into force over the next year or so.

At the annual conference of the Irish Council for Social Housing on 29th. September Inis was presented with a national award for excellence in Community Housing development.

Pearse O Shiel, the chairman of the association, expressed his delight at the outcome of a number of years of hard work and collaboration between the design team – Initiatives Architects, the voluntary board of the association, Bohergar Construction and South Tipperary County Council along with the support from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. “This award is important to a small association that has ambitions to lead the way in the development of low energy high performance housing in the Mid West region. Inis will maintain its regional focus to ensure a continuing direct link between the Housing Assciation and the communty iut serves.” Under the new funding schemes Inis Housing Association Ltd. will look to purchase existing unsold houses and make them available to families on the housing waiting list but will ensure that only properties of the highest quality are considered for purchase.

“The overriding concern of the association is to provide family housing of the highest quality that will make efficient use of energy and thus reduce the cost to residents.”
