Salary Range: €60,000 - €75,000 per annum
 

THE ORGANISATION & ROLE OVERVIEW

The Mendicity Institution has been challenging homelessness in Dublin since 1818. As the organisation moves towards celebrating its 200th anniversary, the Board of Directors wishes to appoint an Executive Director to lead the strategic development of one of Dublin’s oldest charities, build on the strong progress made to date and to lead the organisation in the successful delivery of the next phase of the strategic plan.
 
The role of Executive Director of the Mendicity Institution is an attractive and exciting challenge. As a key member of the organisation, the Executive Director will be expected to work closely with the Board and drive the leadership and management of all staff members, programmes, projects, finances and all other administrative aspects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

Service and Support Development
  • Implement annual operational plans that deliver on the organisational strategic plan and identified objectives
  • Ensure projects and support services policies and procedures are revised and updated as necessary and reflect best practice in the delivery of support to vulnerable service users
  • Explore new innovative potential avenues for the Mendicity in the effective delivery of projects and supports services
 
Promotion and Collaboration
  • Develop and maintain effective formal and informal collaborative arrangements with statutory, non-statutory and other relevant agencies and institutes to develop initiatives to enhance the long-term service provision to our service users and ensure viability of the Mendicity
  • Develop network and working relationships with related organisations with a view to maximising the profile of Mendicity
  • Develop relationships with, and make submissions to, Government departments and agencies with a view to influencing policy in relation to the needs of our service users
  • Influence and promote secure additional resources to enable the effective provision of a comprehensive range of services to our service users
 
Financing and Development
  • Oversee, support and promote the day to day financial administration, management and governance of the organisation
  • Prepare proposed budgets for consideration by the Board of Directors, ensuring that the Mendicity operates within approved budgets
  • Ensure accurate maintenance and preparation of monthly and periodic statements in relation to all financial matters in full compliance with clearly established internal accounting procedures
  • Oversee effective fundraising in conjunction with existing management
 
Working with the Board of Directors and Governance
  • Report formally to the Board of Directors on a regular basis on all aspects of operations, preparing relevant updates, presentations and reports as required
  • Prepare materials for Board consideration and facilitate the strategic planning of the Board of Directors and deliver upon strategic objectives identified
  • Advise and work with the Board of Directors on compliance, policy, risk and other regulatory matters to enable fulfilment of its governance functions and facilitate optimum performance
  • Determine the compatibility of proposed projects and programmes with the strategic objectives of the Board
 
People and Volunteer Management
  • Ensure effective management of human resources, including recruitment, performance management and development
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation through implementation of best practice work structures, policies and procedures
  • Oversee, recruit, induct, train, manage and develop staff in line with plans and needs of the organisation
  • Oversee and support the development of the volunteer structure in line with best practice and the needs of the organisation
 
Office Administration
  • Ensure written procedures for all processes and procedures are in place and maintained
  • Enter into any contracts or leases or the execution and delivery of instruments in the name of and on behalf of the organisation as authorised through approved budgets and/or resolutions of the Board of Directors and in line with contract approval levels
  • Ensure that best practice internal systems in relation to finance, communication, record-keeping, and documentation including the maintenance of all records of contracts, leases and legal instruments are in place and maintained
  • Ensure all minutes and records of meetings and all other related correspondence are recorded

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Key requirements for the position of Executive Director of the Mendicity Institution include:
 
 
Essential Criteria
  • Ability to maintain and enhance the culture and ethos of the Mendicity
  • Compassionate with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work with existing management with proven capacity to lead and motivate staff, to develop, enhance and maintain appropriate collaborative working environment, encourage effective performance and team building
  • Education to degree level in a related area, or substantial relevant experience
  • Proven experience and skills in leadership, change management, project management
  • Demonstrable financial management skills to ensure effective budgetary planning, resource management and value for money
  • Thorough knowledge of regulatory frameworks for charities and companies limited by guarantee
  • Strong IT and administrative skills to ensure the Institute is operated in an efficient and accountable manner
 
Desirable
  • Knowledge of homelessness and poverty-eradication services
  • Experience of managing volunteers
  • A successful track record in building and nurturing key relationships and partnerships with a wide range of diverse collaborators within government, not-for-profit sectors at national and local level
  • Excellent report-writing skills
  • Commercial awareness and experience in fundraising
